CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL RODEO ASSOCIATION Recap of the: BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Piccadilly Inn, Fresno, California January 8th and 9th 2011
1. There have been personnel changes in the NHSRA headquarters. Michael Dixon has replaced resigning Kent Sturman as Executive Director/CEO. 2. Current membership stands at 524 for the High School Division. Junior High is currently Division is 215. 3. Tickets for the Raffle of the ATV are due February 1st to your District. The District has to turn in the monies by February 8th to Earlene Brooks. Challenge of Champions Qualifiers who do not turn theirs in by Feb. 1st, will loose their opportunity to attend that rodeo. Additional Tickets may continue to be sold up until the raffle drawing in June as the High School State Finals. 4. Important rodeo dates include: Challenge of Champions, Plymouth Ca. March 25, 26, 27th : State Finals, Bishop Ca. June 13-18. The State is returning to a 2-go and a short, format this year. Help is needed on Sunday night putting up banners in the two arenas. Please contact our National Director Steve Brooks, or our State Finals Chairperson, Dave Carter, if you can lend a hand. It was discussed to extend our contract with Bishop, and add 3 years to existing contract, with option at the end of that term. This will be on the April CHSRA meeting agenda. 5. The NHSRA National Finals will be in Gillette, WY again this year. Plans for Illinois for 2012-13 are on hold at this point, and may not take place there at all. The Junior High Division National Finals continues to be hosted by Gallup, NM. 6. Regarding the fast approaching dates of the Challenge Rodeo: Plans are progressing on target according to Director Craig Williams. Chuck Morris will be working as our stock contractor. We are looking forward to a great time and some fantastic competition on this Invitational event representing the top three contestants in each event from each district. There will be an Event Director/Staff Meeting at 5PM on Friday at the Announcers Stand. Also discussed getting free tickets out to the elementary schools in the area, with free admission if accompanied by a paying adult. There will be a Team Roping Fundraiser Saturday evening sometime after the Performance. 7. District Event Duties at Challenge: Dist 1, Cutting; Dist 2, Poles/Barrels; Dist 3, Goats; Dist 4, Timing Lights/Stripping Chutes; Dist 5, Stalling/Camping; Dist 6, Cattle/sorting; Dist 7, Barrier; Dist. 8, Program sales; Dist 9, Check In. 8. The state will again be represented at the Pomona Equine Event, in February. If you are in the area and can help man the booth, it would be appreciated. In addition, it is a great exposure to sell trailer tickets. 9. The Challenge rodeo will also offer Scholarship Application information and mock interviews to practice for the State Final Scholarship interview process. This will take place Saturday after the Saturday Performance in Plymouth. Remember to turn in your district silent auction items to Challenge and turn these into the office for further direction. . Also, the district who contributes Challenge Rodeo Silent Auction items with the highest sale value, will be receive an additional $250 scholarship to be awarded to their students by the state scholarship committee. 10. Junior High Division State Finals planning continues, will be held in Plymouth again this year, it was voted to continue the felt back numbers for the contestants. District duties were established. Thursday night need help putting up banners in the arena. Awards budget was set and approved. 11. Publicity, planning for the 40th Anniversary for next year. Les Schwab will continue as AA Saddle Sponsor again this year. New refreshed overhaul on the CHSRA web site is complete. 12. Seniors that qualify for State Finals, are eligible to apply for the state scholarship funds and will receive an application at their District Finals. Please follow the directions exactly to avoid problems of disqualification. Seniors who have rodeoed for at least three years with us, and who did not qualify for the State Finals their senior year, may qualify for a scholarship from the state in the amount of $250 to be awarded by each district. The District is in charge of determining who this is awarded to based on the applications they receive from those who apply for their District Scholarships 13. The state budget was reviewed and a copy of this current year is in the hands of the district reps. We are on target at this time, but carefully watching our expenses for our state rodeo finals. 14. As districts begin thinking about leadership positions for the 11-12 rodeo year, please remember that our state board adopted a by-law a few years ago, that brings our district presidents on board as one of the two state reps for each district. It is anticipated that this move will continue to improve our communication link to each district, thus improving the state's service. 15. Steve Brooks will be representing our state at the January mid-winter meeting in Denver for NHSRA. 16. Queen Clinic being held this weekend had 6 attendees. Multi Dist Queen contest offered again in April to take place at the Piccadilly Inn, Fresno on the 16th. Districts that want to take part in this in place of having their own contest in their District, are invited to participate. Contact your current District queen for more information.
